Nestos

The last jungle in Europe

One of the five largest rivers in Greece, the Nestos forms the natural border between the prefectures of Kavala and Xanthi. Its landscape, stretching from mountain gorges to vast wetlands, creates one of the most impressive natural environments in the country.

The Nestos Delta, covering 550,000 acres, is protected under the Ramsar Convention and recognized as a National Park of international importance. Its exceptional ecosystem hosts more than 300 species of birds, along with numerous mammals, amphibians, and reptiles.

Along the riverbanks lies the famous riparian forest “Koja Orman,” a lush, green refuge rich in vegetation and wildlife. This unique landscape has earned the area the nickname “The last jungle in Europe.”

The Nestos region is a paradise for nature and adventure lovers. Local companies organize guided activities such as canoe–kayak, rafting, hiking, birdwatching, archery, and mountain biking, offering visitors the chance to experience the river’s beauty up close.

For those seeking more information, the Nestos Delta Information Center in Keramoti provides insights into the wetlands, guided tours, and educational material about the area’s ecological importance.
